Learn to Drive in Ayrshire with Phil Motum

Learning to drive can be a daunting prospect. I recognise that people are different and learn at different speeds and in different manners. I pride my ability to recognise this in people and aim to adapt my teaching style to suit the needs of the student. There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” driving course. My teaching style is pupil orientated and I aim to coach people to bring out the best in them to achieve the best results possible. I achieve this with structured training and pre set objectives. At all times the student will be aware of these pre set objectives.

Course Syllabus

When you use Phil Motum as your Driving Instructor to learn to drive in Ayrshire you will learn the exact same syllabus on an intensive course over a week as you would if you took 1 hour a week over 40 weeks. The length of time that you wish to take to learn is up to you. It all depends on how you learn. Private practise between lessons speeds up the learning process and I would highly recommend it. Do not worry about picking up bad habits as this can be resolved on your lessons. I follow the syllabus as set by the DSA, who carry out the Practical tests.

Changes to the Driving Test in Oct 2010: Independent Driving

Helping a Learner:

Parents and Friends may tell you that they had half a dozen lessons then sat their test and passed. This may be the case, but now it is not the norm. With more roads and more traffic now than 10 years ago, the new driver has to be fully capable of dealing with any given situation. This is where I come in. The DSA Practical Driving Test is a test of the minimum standards required to be legally allowed to drive unsupervised. Note the word minimum.

Preparing for your driving test

Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice. Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test.

How quick do you want to learn?

Lessons can either be 1 or 2 hour sessions. This would be on a continuous weekly basis.

If you want to shorten the time period for passing, think about a Semi Intensive course.

This would involve 2 or more sessions a week of at least 2 hours per lesson.

Intensive Courses

I also cater for Intensive courses, where the full syllabus is covered in a 1 week or 2 week period. This is immediately followed by a test. This option is only available to those who have already passed the DSA Theory Test. (And is still valid)

This option does not suit everybody and involves a full days driving. Concentration needs to be kept for the whole duration on each of these days.

Typical day for this type of course consists of:

1000 to 1300 lessons

1300 to 1400 lunch (A much needed break from the car)

1400 to 1600 lessons

I can be flexible to meet individual’s needs. I can start earlier and finish later.

Prior to starting this course I would need to carry out a 2 hour Assessment drive / lesson.

This is to decide if an Intensive course is suited to you and how many hours would be required. I have had above average success with this type of course.

Motorway Courses

motorway training

This is for full license holders only.

If you have never driven on a motorway before and the very thought of it terrifies you, look no further. I will guide you through the processes involved and give you the skills to keep you safe and confident on the motorways. This will be at least a 2 hour lesson.

Refresher Courses

These are ideal for people who want to improve their driving skills to drive safely and with confidence.

Refresher courses are suitable for people:

  • Who have passed their driving test but have not driven regularly since.
  • Who need to drive on a more regular basis than they are used to.
  • Who will supervise their son or daughter whilst they're learning with an instructor and want to update their own knowledge and skills.

Driving Lesson Training Area

Initially your lessons, where possible, will be in the area close to your home. As you progress through the syllabus, you will move onto busier roads including Dual Carriageways. You can choose to take your test in either, Kilmarnock, Saltcoats or Ayr. As I have already stated, I will not teach you the Test routes. I will however, teach you in the areas where the tests are conducted. Each of the Test Centres have their own problematic areas. An example of which is Ayr Test Centre has over a dozen different routes using Whitletts Roundabout. This roundabout on first sight may appear to be something from your nightmares. But with the correct guidance, it is actually a very easy roundabout to use. If you are using Ayr Test Centre, you will be very confident in using this roundabout come test day.

The aim of my driving lessons is to make you a competent and confident driver capable of driving anywhere.

Wherever you choose to learn to drive, it is good to be familiar with the area on the day of the test. According to test availability you may choose to take the test elsewhere. In this case your lesson time would need to increase to accommodate the travelling.

Learn to drive in Irvine
If you have your Driving Lessons in Irvine you are well suited to have your Driving Test in either Saltcoats or Kilmarnock. It is not too far to travel to have driving lessons in Ayr and sit the Driving Test in Ayr.

Learn to drive in Kilwinning
If you have your Driving Lessons in Kilwinning you are best suited to have your Driving Test in Saltcoats. Parts of the test routes in Saltcoats go into Kilwinning.

Learn to drive in Troon or Prestwick
If you have your Driving Lessons in Troon or Prestwick, you would be best suited to sit the Driving Test in Ayr. Parts of Ayr test route is in and around the Prestwick area and Monkton.

The Driving Test

Usually I will book the practical test on the student's behalf.
The main reason for this is so that I am actually available to provide the training car for Test use.
The average test waiting time is 6 weeks. Often, I will plan ahead and book a test for the student in line with his / her training. However, if a student misses lessons or is not up to the required standard the test will be postponed. I believe that sending a student to test when they are not ready puts their life, the examiners life and other road users and pedestrians’ lives in danger. Apart from a Mock Test, this will be the first time the student will drive without support. If the examiner has to intervene the result will be a fail. Nerves can play a part on test day and this may result in a drop in form. This is another reason to be at a standard above that which is required.

If a test has been booked prior to starting lessons with me, I reserve the right to refuse the use of my training vehicle for test if the student is not at the minimum required standard.
